Consider the sun, the sun is considered to be the origin of the planets, that the planets are to a large extent outpourings from the sun, that the planets were part of celestial body that included the sun.
The earth is considered by some to be a conscious intelligent being, only that we are not aware of it. Perhaps I should say I am not, because there others who say they are conscious if its intelligence and its communicating ability.
The earth is the offshoot of the sun. It is about 8000 miles in diameter, compared with sun's 862,000 miles. Lets make an analogy, if the sun is the size of a basketball 9.5 inches in width, the earth is about then 1/12 of an inch. It barely measures. As for us humans, we cannot even show up in the picture. If the earth is self is an intelligent being, then the sun which is the earth's mother, must be of an intelligence which is infinite compared with earth.
Consider such being as one possessed of life. Seeing, tasting, touching, smelling, eating and drinking, with the qualities of thought, intelligence, consciousness, memory and procreation. Can we even conceive what such a being may be like?
Here are links to a few pictures showing the size of the earth compared with the Sun.

You can even see how some of these stars completely dwarf our Sun, and these stars are Vishnu's babies.
The Sun is in a galaxy (a large group of stars) called the Milky Way which is estimated to contain 200 - 400 billion stars, and that is just our galaxy alone, and all these galaxies are Vishnu's children. Does this begin to give you an idea of what Vishnu might be like?
Should we continue, or continue lest we get blinded and consumed by the realization of our own imagination? Consider such a being - seeing, tasting, touching, smelling, eating and drinking, with the qualities of thought, intelligence, consciousness, memory, procreation and love. If it wasn't our knowledge that such a being was one of compassion, love and procreation, we would be consumed by our own imaginations.
There are astronomical objects known as quasars some of which generate as much as energy as hundreds of galaxies, as much energy as one trillion suns. This energy is realised by the consumption of matter in the black holes that are at their centre. Galaxies such as our Milky Way, with its 200 to 400 billiion stars are the remainder when the material needed to feed the power output of quasars is exhausted.
The hairs on our own Sun would stand on end in the presence of such an entity, and yet we are awed by own Sun which is much a sight of Vishnu as we can handle. Consider that Vishnu is to a quasar even more then the Sun is to a human being, the mother of all such entities. Does that give an idea of what Vishnu is like?
When you consider love, sentience, awareness as a feature of such an entity one can only image what Vishnu might be like.
Yet as human beings we are a part of Vishnu just as much Nara is one with Narayana. This is our mystery as human beings. Our quest it to unite the Nara in us, the Nara that is Arjuna with Narayana that is Krishna.
This is how the mystery of Krishna being an incarnation of Vishnu must be considered. The sheer concept, the sheer notion itself is beyond comprehension, let alone the actual reality. It is in the light of this that Krishna must be viewed. Arguments about the historical reality of Krishna barely make sense with such an understanding.
The western notion of intelligence and consciousness as a quality only present in biological reproducing creatures, fails to instill is with a proper appreciation of God.
Consider the whole universe, and consider that Vishnu is to the whole universe even more than the Sun is to a human being. Let us consider this Sun of the universe, and let us consider a 1,000,000 of these Suns. Vishnu's nature is so vast and immeasurable that trillions of these Suns cannot light up Vishnu's being just as all the stars at cannot light up the night sky. This is why Vishnu remains dark, because all the light of the universe and more cannot light up the infinitude of his Being.
You know what, after all this consideration I will stick with Vishnu as the Sun, the Sun is an adequate visual representation of Vishnu for me. It's size compared with the Earth is well enough within my comprehension is something I can handle.
It will suffice for me, you might consider differently.
